Wednesday morning L wanted to help mom do some laundry, so we were in the basement together and while we were folding laundry on the floor, L was practicing his new standing and cruising abilities, except he lost his balance. Typically he falls on his bum and then to the side, so I was right there with my hand to catch him, except this time he fell straight back and the back of his head his the concrete. Thankfully it was partially cushioned with a bit of laundry, but barely. He screamed and screamed and screamed. But after a few minutes, he calmed down.
I called our family doctor and she said despite that it was essentially his nap time, not to let him sleep for at least 2 hours. So we nursed and then I decided that a good way to divert his attention was to read. So we sat on the couch and read some of his favorite finger puppet books and his all time favorite, Bear Snores On. But before we could finish Bear Snores on, he vomited. So we picked up our stuff, and got in the car to drive to the ER. The Sparrow pediatric ER was really nice, very welcoming, and all the staff there were super supportive.
L got checked out from a PA and then the head peds ER doc. They said he looked great. Pupils good, strength even, no mushy spots on the head, no discharge or blood. He did have a slight bruise by his eye, but we actually think that that was unrelated and probably a book related injury (he is an active reader). They also did a CAT scan to make sure that everything was okay inside his noggin (which is was). He got a clean bill of health. Our plan of attack is to relocate the jumperoo to the basement so that he can be a bit more "contained" while doing laundry rather than trying out all of his new cruising abilities.
It was definitely a hard and emotional day. That night we were all fairly snuggly to make up for it. He is doing just great now, and we saved the hospital bracelets, knowing that this will be the first of probably many visits -- especially since it seems like L has no fear and just throws himself into situations with no care or caution.

The first of many. They don't get any easier. Just wait until you go to the ER for one thing and he gets injured AT the ER!!!!!!!!!!!! That is fun.....
